The gin imported by Capone's rivals on the North Side of Chicago was smooth, and usually consumed with ginger ale called “The Northside”. However, the gin consumed by Al Capone's gang had a rougher finish, and required more sweeteners like citrus fruit and sugars to make it palatable. So, the South Side was born. Someone added a splash of soda and now we have the Southside FIZZ!

Whichever the case, the South Side and its refreshing combination of gin, citrus, sugar and mint is a classic cocktail.

The recipe can be traced back to at least 1916, when it appeared in Huge Enslinn’s book “Recipes for Mixed Drinks” as the South Side Fizz. His version called for gin, lemon and lime juices, sugar, mint and club soda.

Multiple accounts peg the South Side’s creation to the 21 Club in New York, a bar that poured countless South Sides throughout the decades. But considering that the first iteration of the famous speakeasy didn’t open until 1922, it’s more likely that the bar popularized the drink rather than invented it. I myself first tasted this wonderful concoction at 21, one of my favorite hangouts here in NYC steeped in history. There was nothing quite like that room full of toys and paraphernalia on the ceiling. I do hope one day it reopens.

And now I present to you…

The Doris Dear Southside Fizz

INGREDIENTS

1 ½ ounces gin (Tanqueray is recommended)

½ ounce simple syrup

Sprig of mint leaves

½ oz lime juice

Splash of club soda

DIRECTIONS

Place all ingredients in a mixing glass and shake carefully to not bruise the mint leaves but release the flavorful oils.

Welcome back to Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk. Today in the Rumpus Room we are yet again with Miss Helen Gurley Brown and her 1962 album “Lessons in Love”. This album was an addendum to her best seller “Sex and the Single Girl” and it’s Full of advice. Today Helen really shows us her philosophy in which women are the rulers, not only in the bedroom, but on the job. Take a listen to this track entitled “ The Love Life of a Boss and Secretary”. Sharpen those pencils and get ready… Helen puts the woman in charge.

Now let's talk about a very important man in your life.

If you're a secretary.

If this is to be that most satisfactory of all man woman relationships, the first thing to do is hire the right boss.

See how Helen turns the tables and instead of the woman tirelessly trying to find a job she puts the woman in charge. The WOMAN is doing the hiring here! Nows listen to this…

If you're efficient and discriminating, you certainly can hire A rich, successful, beautiful kind.

Wonderful, lovable employer.

If, in spite of careful sifting of prospects, however, it becomes obvious that you've managed to hire A loser.

The kindest thing to do is to fire him, give him a couple of weeks notice and tell him you'll give him his references for a new secretary if he wants them.>

ok I adore this. Remember we are in 1962! This was revolutionary! OK Helen, hit us with some more…

But suppose you've managed to hire A jewel.

Well, I can think of dozens of reasons why you shouldn't become this man's mistress, especially if he's a wonder boy.

You need him as a stabilizing, mature Plymouth Rock kind of influence.

Besides, your job should give you solace when love affairs are turning wormy.

If your boss is the love affair and the office is your daily trysting place.

Where you're going?

Do be efficient.

I know it seems unnecessary, but you'll have such a nice warm feeling about it.

I know one chap who actually gets tears in his eyes when he finds long freshly sharpened pencils in his desk drawer and the sight of a new address book chokes him up all morning.

Be the bearer of lovely tidings every day.

You are sharazad amusing the king if you have to make them up well, just make them good.

If you can imply that the prettiest girl in the filing room has the hots for your boss, you may still be there when your profit sharing is really amounted to something.

Your boss and you can have a lifelong flame, the kind that never ends.

If you choose him wisely and love him well

I love how Helen is always talking about “profit sharing”. Did all those girls in the “pool” get profit sharing. Now remember this is the early 60’s. Women couldn’t open checking accounts or buy houses without a man cosigning for them. Helen was bringing the “Sex and the City” lifestyle to women long before Amanda ever even thought about it.

Taffy worked in a bank when I was in the 8th grade. She demanded women could wear pants, the bosses said no but she fought against them and won. The rules for that certain international bank changed the rules so women could wear pants to work! Mom was a leader in her own right. A beautiful, strong mother, wife and caretaker.

At the door we get a surprise visit from Sandy Duncan!!! Sandy is an acclaimed TV, film, and Broadway star, with unforgettable performances in "The Hogan Family," "The Sandy Duncan Show" and the Broadway productions of "Peter Pan" and "The Boyfriend." I can't wait for you to hear her share her stories and insights with me on this special episode.

I also mixed up a fab cocktail for Sandy... The Dorothy Parker! A wonderful concoction that fits this dynamo performer! It's a yummy cocktail full of Gin, St Germain and Basil! MMMMM good!

Welcome to the Bar Cart, the place where we make the cocktails, we serve in the Rumpus room.

Today we enjoyed the Dorothy Parker, named after the infamous “Algonquin Round Table” leader

The infamous Algonquin Hotel on 99 West Forty-fourth Street, had a storied reputation for attracting actors, poets and literary characters. The very first guests checked in on November 22, 1902 when a room and bath cost two dollars a day, while a three-bedroom, three-bath suite with private hall, sitting room, dining room, and library ran ten dollars, that’s about $350 today! Dorothy Parker's career took off in 1918 while she was writing theater criticism for Vanity Fair. Ms Parker and her literary friends began lunching at the Algonquin Hotel on a near-daily basis and became founding members of what became known as the Algonquin Round Table. The Algonquin’s Blue Bar created a cocktail named after the infamous Dorothy Parker and rightfully so. Her verses were usually concerned with love, loss and Champaign! The Blue Bar at the hotel takes its name from its blue lighting, a recommendation by actor John Barrymore. He told the owner that blue gels are placed over stage lights because they make people look good. With that advice, Case installed blue lighting in the bar. Hmmmm Guess I need more Blue Lighting! Once while Ms Parker was in her room, (she lived at the Hotel), the front desk asked if she “had a gentleman in her room”. It was the 1920’s when men we not allowed in a ladys room. She answered “hold on, I’ll ask him!”. Wow, I would have loved to have met her!

In the 1920’s alone. Ms Parker published over 300 poems and verses in publications like Vanity Fair, Vogue, The New Yorker and more. Her first volume of poetry entitled “Enough Rope” in 1926 sold over 47,000 copies… Imagine that! WOWZA!

The Algonquin Round Table eventually wrote a musical revue entitled “ No Siree!” with many of its members writing skits and starring in it. Ms Parker wrote a musical number entitled The Everlastin’ Ingenue Blues” which featured chorus girls Tallulah Bankhead, Helen Hayes and other luminaries of the stage. It ran for one night only and was a huge success.

Groucho Marx said "The price of admission is a serpent's tongue and a half-concealed stiletto."

Dorothy Parker herself apparently said “The Round Table was just a lot of people telling jokes and telling each other how good they were.” LOL

Sounds like a love hate relationship between artists. AHHHH the good ol days!

Her legacy lives on today. In fact , Television creator Amy Sherman-Palladino of the Mrs Mazel fame, named her production company 'Dorothy Parker Drank Here Productions' in tribute to Parker.

And of course there is the cocktail, created for the Blue Bar by Allen Katz, general manager of the New York Distilling Company.

To quote Dorothy herself…

“I love a martini, but 2 at the most, 3 I’m under the table, 4 I’m under the host.

And now…

The Dorothy Parker

INGREDIENTS

2 to 3 ounces gin

½ ounce St. Germain

½ ounce fresh lemon juice

Welcome back to Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk! Today we talk PERFUME! The scents that have sometimes lead to “situations”!

Now as we continue with our Album by Mis Helen Gurly Brown, “Lessons in Love” she brings up perfume many times. Let’s take a quick listen as she talks to Girls who she says is the luckiest of sexes…

How do you love a man or or find a man to love when you aren't pretty?

Some people think I am pretty and well, I admit I do look better than I used to, but I can remember what it was like to be the less pretty one in every single girlfriend combination and to be looked over and then never asked out by men who insisted on a dazzler for a date.

It's OK, everybody likes to look at pretty girls.

But how do we unspectacular ones compete? I'm sure you know the obvious ways, being a personality whiz and listening like you've been snaked charmed. When a man opens his mouth and being firm of bosom and live of figure also, you know to wear dreamy dresses even if you have to hold three jobs at one time to afford them. And to splash perfume all over you. Or better still, drench cotton with it and tuck it in your bra.

If you aren't doing all these things, my plain friend, then you don't really want a man as to new noses and fake lashes and straightened teeth. I'm all for them and so are most men who really love women.

Ok Ok… well, Ms Brown has a lot to say. Thank god my bosoms are firm since I bought them in China!!!

Now some more from Helen…

Presents take the pressure off, so do give them money. It's a perfectly wonderful present you know doesn't have as insulting as you'd like to think. A nice share of General Motors or a USE bond tucked in with a bottle of Arpege perfume really are very hard to take offense at.

Oh my god! I mean, sure, why not! I mean I’ll put this out right now… if you would like to send me a share of General Motors wrapped around a bottle of Arpege, feel free darling!

Well it’s plain to see that according to Ms Brown, wearing perfume is an important part of “being a woman”. The scent developed by a “NOSE” filled with mystical scents such as Ambergris, Bergmot, Citron, Civet, Frangipani to name a few, is as important now as it was back in the day.

To finish today discussion I give you this quote from a New York Times article published in 1973,

“Since her marriage. Helen Gurley Brown, editor of Cosmopolitan magazine, has used Arpege because her husband likes it and can now afford it. It is $29.50 an ounce.” But, added Mrs Brown. the matriarch of the swinging singles st, she is having a fling with Revlon's Charlie. “It's like having a new lover,” she said.”

Well good for you Helen!

Taffy my mom loved her perfumes. I fell her presence when I smell it.

This week we have an entertaining and informative guest in Rodrigo Flores-Roux. He is a "nose". That means that he creates perfumes for a living! Not only does he create them, but he is one of the top people in that industry, a multiple award winner at his craft! We have a fascinating chat delving into how perfumes are made and the "science of scent". Rodrigo has created some of the best selling perfumes in the world. His big personality is full of so much joy, you won't want to miss this.

As they sing in "La Cage aux Folles"...

'So when my spirit starts to sag

I hustle out my highest drag,

And put a little more mascara on.

And everything's ankle straps, Maribou, SHALIMAR!!!'

Mom was always wearing her perfumes when she was dressed up for her soirees. I remember her heading to the Rumpus Room for her Saturday night parties while the lingering scent of her perfume kept me company as I slowly fell asleep. The scent of Chanel #5, Arpége or Shalimar holding me like a loving hug. Just one sniff of those perfumes and I am transported back to our home in Staten Island. I rarely go out without a spray of Chanel #5 on me! Mr Flores-Roux gives us the history of these infamous scents and I am once again reminded that Taffy was truly a fashion icon!

Of course we head to the bar cart for a fab cocktail that is one of Rodrigos favorites... the Negroni! A delish concoction with a fabled history that only Doris Dear could tell us about. People love these recipes!

Welcome to the Bar Cart, the place where we make the cocktails, we serve in the Rumpus room.

Today we enjoyed the delicious Negroni, an aperitivo.. It gained worldwide popularity as a drink to stimulate your appetite before a meal.

The history of this particular cocktail is one of the great cocktail myths yet to have a fully proven truth. Ranging from Italy, to Africa to even a cowboy from the United States, it is one that rests upon an image of a man with a killer moustache!

The most widely reported account is that it was first mixed in Florence, Italy, in 1919, at Caffè Casoni (then called Caffè Giacosa), on Via de' Tornabuoni. Count Camillo Negroni concocted it by asking the bartender, Fosco Scarselli, to strengthen his favorite cocktail, the Americano, by adding gin rather than the normal soda water. The bartender also added an orange garnish rather than the typical lemon garnish of the Americano to signify that it was a different drink. Boom – the Negroni was born and named accordingly in his honour. Now here is where the myth gets complicated

You will eventually come across an image of a strapping gentleman with a Top hat, high collar, overcoat, cane, gloves and of course a smashing mustache all a part of being a supposed Count Negroni. The man is actually believed to be Arnold Henry Savage Landor a Florentine painter, explorer, writer, anthropologist and cat lover whose art and global adventures made him a legend of his time. A legend he was, but a Count of Negroni not so much.

According to the present day Marquis de Negroni, Francois Hubert, there has never been anyone named Camillo Negroni throughout their family history. Francois compiled a 300 page plus geneology report in order to be accepted into the order of the Knights of Malta that proves the supposed Count Negroni never existed!

Francois says that not only was Camillo a made up name but that the real Count Negroni – Pascal Olivier – first created the drink in the Senegalese city of Saint Louis in West Africa as a present to his bride and a digestive aid for himself.

And, the Negroi Antica Distilleria is an Italian distillery located 45km north of Venice was established by Cavaliere Guglilmo Negroni and according to their website, have been distilling grappa and a bottled Negroni since it’s foundation in 1919 after the initial success of the family cocktail. But they say they invented the cocktail in 1919, and then they opened and built a full distillery that same year because it was so popular??? Hmmmmm this sounds like a movie script to me, sounds like this myth continues to spark great stories.

We may never know the truth, but what I do know is its delish! In 2013, Negroni Week was launched, celebrating the cocktail while raising money for philanthropy. Negroni Week has raised over $3 million for charity worldwide.

While living in Rome in 1947, Orson Wells wrote of the Negroni:

“The bitters are excellent for your liver, the gin is bad for you but they balance each other.”

And Now I present to you,

The Doris Dear Negroni!

<INGREDIENTS>

1 ounce gin

1 ounce Campari

1 ounce sweet vermouth

Orange twist

Stir ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice. I feel like I just had the hottest date of my life. That Helen Gurley Brown must have had some sex life. Or do we think it’s a case of “those that talk about it rarely have it”!!! And can we discuss for a moment gender? I mean people loved dividing what they like to think was only 2 genders with a hard thick line…. See what I did there! LOL. “Men are men” and “women are women” was the a constant excuse for bad behaviors. Today, thank God, we are more open to people being who they want to be and being accepted as that. And we don’t accept misogynistic behavior as ok. Do you hear me! A description in the 1953 popular best selling Raymond Chandler novel “The Long Goodbye”, his sixth novel featuring the private investigator Philip Marlowe, stated that "a real gimlet is half gin and half Rose's lime juice and nothing else."

Once again we come across several different stories as to how this drink got its name.

The most obvious derivation is from the tool for drilling small holes, a word also used figuratively to describe something as sharp or piercing.

Wait, we’re still talking about a drink right???

Thus, the cocktail may have been named for its "penetrating" effects on the drinker.

I feel like I just had a date!

The other story goes that the drink was named after the British Royal Navy surgeon Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Gimlette who allegedly introduced this drink as a means of inducing his messmates to take lime juice as an anti-scurvy medication. However, neither his obituary, nor his entry in Who Was Who mention this association. But for me, I think this is the most believable one since there is proven history that the troops regularly partook in gin drinking and what better way to stop scurvy!

And now I present to you the version I enjoy, which is a variation from my go to bible of cocktails, the rare, hard to find Esquire Drink Book!

THE DORIS DEAR GIMLET!

Welcome back to the rumpus room!

Now, in the last episode we introduced you to our pick of the season, Helen Gurly Brown, author of “Sex and the Single Girl”. We started to listen to excerpts from her album, “Lessons in Love”. Now in 1965, after her book had taken the world by storm, she took over as editor in chief of a rather dry literary magazine called Cosmopolitan, and used her new vision of what a women should be to its pages. When she finished being editor 32 years later, it had become the go-to magazine for both men and women to read about a modern, sexually assured, style-conscious, ambitious and sexually confident brand of feminism.

Today we take a listen to Ms Browns first bit of advice on How to have an affair… the rules are simply astonishing…

I assume the girl you want is some very special girl. You're sort of lazy, and you aren't thinking about how it is with her, so rule one is take time to court her. rule 2 love her out of bed. Laugh at her jokes. Women have fantastic egos 2 you know, even Pretty Little slips of girls just love to be thought fascinating. And funny, make her talk to you and you listen. Don't ever patronize her, no matter how shy she is. Make her feel that with you. She's a dynamo Rule 3 admire her character, even if she doesn't have any.

You like the way she handles her job, her friends, her family, her money, and when bedtime comes, you'll have her thinking that with you at least, she can't do anything wrong. This treatment won't work with girls who like to be punished and mistreated. But we're not talking about them just now.

Well, thank you Helen! Court her, don’t ever patronize her, make her feel like a dynamo! What does that even mean? Now, let’s remember that this was the early 1960’s and times were very different for women. Women couldn’t buy a house or even have a bank account unless their husbands cosigned with them. I can tell you that Taffy, my mother, would have none of that! She fought long and hard to be equal! Taffy was a wiz! Although Taffy was never a “Cosmo Girl” she was a beauty and a model and knew how to get her way in a time when women were not equal. I do remember seeing Helen’s book tucked in next to the sofa where mom would sit and spend her late afternoons reading her books. Hmmmmm … now I’m wondering whether mom was a so called DYNAMO!!! So next week we delve into more of Helen’s rules!

OH… who could that be???

There's a knock on the door and it's the fabulous and entertaining Leslie Carrara-Rudolph! With masterpiece murals by Ludwig Bemelmans, the creator of the classic Madeline children’s books, Bemelmans Bar draws socialites, politicians, movie stars and moguls with a large drink menu. According to the Carlyle Hotels website … “Using his distinct style of art, he transformed the bar with whimsical scenes of Central Park that included picnicking rabbits and ice skating elephants. Rather than be paid for his art, Bemelmans exchanged his work for a year and a half of accommodations at The Carlyle for himself and his family.”

Ah artists, always working a deal!

Ludwig and his wife, Madeleine, were among the passengers on the maiden voyage of the Queen Elizabeth I to New York in 1940. (The ship had been painted battleship grey and nicknamed “the grey ghost” for this secret trip, dodging German U-boats as it traversed the Atlantic during World War II. By the end of the war it is estimated the “Queen Mary” had carried more than 800,000 servicemen.

On one of their many trips, the Bemelmans family rendezvoused with Ernest Hemingway and Dorothy Parker in Paris. (we made the Dorothy Parker cocktail this season as well!) Bemelmans’s letters to Hemingway are archived with the rest of Hemingway’s papers in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.. And with Hemmingways extensive travel to Cuba this drink seems only fitting to have been created at Bemelmans Bar!

The drink is a swanky upgrade on the popular Mojito, using aged rum and Angostura bitters and topping the result with two ounces of Champagne. The Carlyle hired Ms Saunders to revamp Bemelmans’ cocktail menu. The Old Cuban was one of the new cocktails she concocted for Bemelmans. A Champagne drink seemed like a perfect choice for this dark, classic drinking establishment full of old-world charm. a natural choice for the timeless, low-lit space, which brims with Old World style and charm. The luscious cocktail became an instant hit with patrons and soon Ms. Saunders took the drink to London and beyond where now it has reached global notoriety!

And now I present

THE OLD CUBAN!

Recipe courtesy of Bemelmans Bar

You will need

It has been a journey bringing season 4 to life! Thanks to all my wonderful supporters, we raised the funds to produce our award winning series for season 4! Wait till you see this seasons guests!

There are 9 in all! We worked hard to bring more stories, more drinks and even more fab guests. This season we have Broadway and TV stars, a puppeteer from The Muppets and Sesame Street, one of the worlds top Perfumers and bonus episodes you won't want to miss!

This season I chose an author that, well, was a game changer for women in the 60’s and on. She was a cultural phenom who changed the way women viewed sex. Before there was ever a “Sex and the City”…. There was … HELEN GURLEY BROWN!

Miss Brown wrote the infamous book “Sex and the Single Girl”. She taught women how to be single and free to do and sleep with whoever they wanted to. She basically invented the character of SAMANTHA in “Sex and the City”. She taught women to demand orgasms and that women should never be ashamed of their sexual urges. When Helen Gurley Brown published her book in 1962, it sold two million copies in the first three weeks and shot straight to the top of the bestseller lists. I guess women needed to know!

She wrote 9 books that covered the ever-changing roles of what she thought women should have. She also made a record. “Lessons in Love” that was an added addendum to the book with advice for single gals, married gals and even men!

She asks on the back of the album… “What makes me an expert in the affairs of men and women and qualified to give advice on records? NOTHING she says! Positively absolutely nothing in this world. She says, I just happen to have a great many options … especially on what men like women to do, and, almost unlimited nerve. She says, I’ve played it cool, crisp and clammy throughout my career and saved my secret thoughts for you…

And now… he’s an excerpt from her album…

Hello, I'm Helen Gurley Brown, and I wrote a book called Sex and the Single Girl.

I had so many things leftover to say, not necessarily to single girls, but to married girls and men, that I'm putting some of them on this record.

There's so much to cover, really, that I think we'll just move right along. Let's start with some. Advice to men on how to have an affair.

Ok, Mrs Brown is getting us right into her world! Hold on tight…

Now, I'm not for promiscuity, but I think it's ridiculous to pretend that it doesn't exist, and I think there's far less hurt and more joy for everybody if certain rules are followed.

So first, how to get a girl to the brink, and 2nd, how to keep her there when you're not going to marry her.

Well there you have it. I’de venture to say that this is one of the best intros on an album I have ever heard.

This season we will explore more of MS Browns advice from the album like Getting the most from you secretary, How to say NO, and How to have an affair and live happily ever after! So welcome back to the Rumpus room and season 4 of “Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk”!

In the late 1940s, Perle Mesta, the newest American ambassador to Luxembourg, was sitting in the bar at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, a place she apparently spent some time at! The bartender, Gustave Tops, made a signature drink for her, and called it the “Black Russian”. The Cold War was just starting, so creating a dark, mysterious drink by mixing Russian vodka with Kahlúa seemed appropriate for the time.

Perle Mesta is not a well-known name today, but in 1949 she was famous for her lavish parties in Washington DC where the worlds of politics and entertainment mixed, mingled and partied all night. Although you may not recognize her name, her nickname is used by many today as she was the original ‘Hostess with the Mostess’. She was so well-known that she made the prestigious cover of TIME Magazine in March 1949. The story goes that President Harry Truman played the piano at one of her parties, while General Dwight Eisenhower apparently sang “Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes”. There are no actual menues of what she was serving at these soirees, but I’m sure the Black Russian must have been a contender. Mesta, by the by, was the inspiration for Sally Adams, the lead character in Irving Berlin’s Call Me Madam—played by Ethel Merman. The show opened on Broadway in 1950.

The Black Russian was turned into a “White Russian” in the mid-1960s. That drink was, of course, immortalized in 1998 when Jeff Bridges, playing the Dude in The Big Lebowski, drank eight of them during the course of the movie. THEN that became the Mudslide, when Baileys Irish Cream was launched! Welcome back to Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk! Polishing polishing polishing!!!!

I’m your hostess, Doris Dear, otherwise known as ‘Americas Perfect Housewife’. Good to see you back in the Rumpus Room!

We are reading from Arlene Dahl’s marvy book entitled “Arlene Dahl’s Lovescopes” from 1983! It’s chock a block full of ideas based on your Zodiac sign on how to keep your lover happy…

My mother Taffy truly believed in the Zodiac, palm reading and psychics. Taffy was a true Scorpio in every sense, as was my sister. Let me tell you, watching those to go at it was like a scene out of “Clash of the Titans”! OH THAT HARRY HAMILL!!! Damn you LISA RENNA! It was a very “in” subject in the 70’s and 80’s. In fact here in NYC there are still many so called “palm readers” along many side streets. They sit in their windows waiting for people to stop by for a reading. I’m not so sure they can truly tell you much, but for a few dollars it is good entertainment!!!

So sit back, relax and it’s time for some psychic magic from this seasons author, Arlene Dahl and her book LOVESCOPES!

Todays cocktail that Jason and I enjoyed was Italy’s favorite cocktail, the Aperol Spritz. Jason is a Gemini, and Geminis are fueled by curiosity, socializing, intellectualizing, and flitting from one thing to the next. Well Jason IS a lawyer! That's why this tantalizing Aperol Spritz is spot on for the air sign. This sign is curious and adaptable, which is perfect since this drink is made with a mixture of ingredients. Since Geminis can be outgoing and playful while also being serious and restless, this delicious drink strikes the ideal balance between fun and traditional … no wonder Jason chose Theatrical Lawyering!!!

Often described as an Italian sunset in a glass, the Aperol Spritz originated in the city of Padua …. Oh how “Kiss Me Kate”!!! and has become one of the most famous cocktails from Italy. The Aperol liqueur became a beloved apéritif in Padua and out of its rising popularity the Aperol Spritz was born during the chic 1950s in Northern Italy.

Aperol finally entered the picture in the early 1900s, when brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri inherited their father's liquor company in 1912, and after seven years of experimentation, debuted the bold, technicolor tipple known as Aperol, inspired by the French term for apéritif: "Apéro." The original recipe, which is still in use today, remains a secret, but does include both bitter and sweet oranges as well as … are you ready for this … rhubarb. !?!? well I do LOVE Strawberry rhubarb pie!

The brand grew in popularity throughout the beginning of the 20th century, but it wasn't until the 1950’s that the official recipe for the Aperol spritz was born. The sip was a hit in its native Italy as an aperitivo—a drink meant to refresh you from the day and get your appetite in gear for the evening.

So now I present to you…

THE DORIS DEAR APEROL SPRITZ!

Equal parts Aperol

Equal parts Cinzano Prosecco

Splash of Soda

Instructions:

Mix all ingredients in a wine glass with ice and gently stir. Garnish with an orange slice.

Welcome back to Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk! I’m just sitting here polishing up our Silver Telly Award that we won for season one of our series! Isn’t she cute! Of course we couldn’t have done it without you, my fans!

I’m your hostess, Doris Dear, otherwise known as ‘Americas Perfect Housewife’. Good to see you back in the Rumpus Room!

Well, here we are with our 3rd season of shows! And what shows we have planned! This seasons guests are Tony Award winners from Broadway, Drag superstars, lawyers, politicians, Broadway producers and an academy award nominated actress! It’s going to be a blast my DEARS!

Live theater is slowly coming back with live Broadway shows starting all over the country. It is so wonderful to see all my friends on the “boards” working again. My mother Taffy loved taking me to the theater here in NYC. My first Broadway show was “Funny Girl” starring Babs herself! I still remember that “Rat a Tat Tat” number! There is nothing like sitting in an audience and hearing the orchestra start. It still gives me chills.

Many times, while we would be in the city, mom would stop by her favorite palm reader for a quick reading. Taffy loved that sort of thing, and many times her and her girlfriends would have “psychic parties” downstairs in our Rumpus Room. The gals would gather to have cocktails and invite a “world famous” psychic to do reading while the girls gossiped!

So in honor of Taffy and the gals, this season we will be doing our own “readings” from an author we saluted last season as well… the one and only Arlene Dahl! This season we read from her best seller… Arlene Dahl’s “Lovescopes…. The Astrological Key to a more exciting more fulfilling love life!”

So sit back, relax and it’s time for some psychic magic!

Ok now the book…

Todays guest is a VIRGO… Charles Busch! He is an amazing artists and this is a 2 part episode!!! So let’s see what Miss Dahl has to SUGGEST!

Welcome to the Doris Dears Bar Chart The place where we make the cocktails we drink here in the Rumpus Room.

Todays cocktail that I enjoyed while interviewing my guest Charles Busch was the Japanese Cocktail! Charles is a Virgo and Virgos are known to be confident and analytical, which is why this Japanese cocktail couldn't match their personalities better. Made with just three ingredients - cognac, bitters, and almond syrup, this delightful drink is sure to impress anyone. Since people born under this sign strive for perfection, they would appreciate this over-the-top delicious drink.

First appearing in Jerry Thomas’s 1862 How to Mix Drinks, the Japanese Cocktail is accompanied with no explanation of its namesake. Despite its name, there are no ingredients in this cocktail that make it Japanese. The background story that brings to light the name of the drink is one of those “cocktail myths” which there are many! Supposedly, The first Japanese delegation to the United States was wrapping up their whirlwind tour of the states, and in June 1860, they stopped in New York. They were staying at the Metropolitan Hotel which was a mere block away from Jerry Thomas’s Palace bar on Broadway.

A translator for one of the delegates was Tateishi Onojirou Noriyuki, or “Tommy,” as he was known among the ladies. He had a penchant for flirting with the ladies and enjoying life to the fullest. A reporter followed the delegation around to report on their daily activities; one of which was a thirst for cocktails. Apparently they visited Jerry Thomas bar often and the cocktail came to be! So all of this leads us to the Japanese Cocktail, first published in Jerry Thomas’s 1862 How to Mix Drinks.

SO… was the Japanese delegation visiting in 1860 the reason for this cocktail? No one really knows but I adore a good myth especially when it comes to cocktails, so I am going with that story!

Based off of the Old Fashioned, this recipe swaps out ingredients to make a familiar, but altogether different tasting cocktail. Instead of whiskey, there is cognac which is made by distilling grapes, as opposed to grains. Using grapes adds a fruitier aroma and flavor. And in place of simple syrup, there is that fab tasting all-too-tasty Orgeat, an almond based sweetener. This drink is rich with touches of fruit along with a nutty sweetness. We are using the original recipe that has “Bokurs Bitters” in the cocktail. Johann Gottlieb Böker created the bitters in 1828. He went out of business during Prohibition on the 1920’s. A small sample was apparently found in 2009, really???? Okkkk and since then small batches have been recreated by a few companies. There is a flavor of spice and a hint of chocolate. If you can’t find them, you can use Angostura bitters but I do encourage you to try the “so called” originals!

So here it is….

Welcome back to our final episode of season 2 of Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk! I’m your hostess, Doris Dear, otherwise known as ‘Americas Perfect Housewife’. Good to see you back in the Rumpus Room!

We have been reading through the fab 1965 book “Always Ask a Man Arlene Dahl’s Key to Femininity”. We’ve had some great tidbits of info from “one of the most beautiful women in the world” … her words not mine!!!

Now in 1965, when this book was published, we had the Vietnam War, Selma Alabama, The Voting Rights Act, "Days of Our Lives" debuts, the mini skirt debuted and in our house, Taffy was sporting her new Lime Green Pant Suit! That’s Taffy, always a fashion plate. With that context it’s interesting to look at this book and see how a section of women were trying to “hold onto” an older idea shall we say of what a woman should be.

My mother Taffy was very smart. She understood all sides of things. She was a fierce believer in woman’s rights and rights for all people. And she used many of those old ideas to get the new ideas in place. She was never a coward when it came to her beliefs. And Duke, my dad, was smart too. He knew to just say YES!!!

Now on to some last little nuggets from this book…. Que the music and welcome back to 1965!

A large part of this book is dedicated to all the men that Miss Dahl knew from her many years in Hollywood. There are many ideas shared by them and here are a few:

The handsome Rock Hudson apparently likes to see redheads in green, brunettes in white, blondes in red, and brownettes in blue!

Hmmmm I think he had a mix of those at all his pool parties!

Tony Perkins said when he was asked what he looks for in a woman, “A girl should act like a girl, and not like the head of a corporation – even if she is!”

TONY!

Montgomery Clift said “The thing that bugs me is the average woman’s complete ignorance of the functional purpose of cosmetics, which is to supplement, not conceal.”

Oh Montgomery, I hope I didn’t overdo!!!

Noel Coward has some “surprisingly” basic ideas about feminine charm. When Arlene asked him for his advice on how women could enhance their appeal, he answered quickly: “Soap and water’s quite good for a starter!!!”

Noel… always good with a quick quip!

Cary Grant can’t bear to hear a woman “baby talk”!!

Well seems Arlene hung out with a “certain type” of man.! Good for you Arlene!

Well that ends our series of delving into this marvy book, a must have to look into a different time. Let’s never forget where we came from!

Thanks for hanging out with me and going back to 1965 with WITH DORIS DEAR AND ARLENE DAHL.

Oh who’s that!!!

<grover dale=""></grover>

Why it's Grover Dale, Broadway legend!

Grover sat in the Rumpus Room and we chatted about his illustrious career on Broadway, in Movies and in TV. Grover is pure delight. He speaks openly about his love affair with Tony Perkins and why he married Anita Morris the red headed raven! He talks about his son and what changed his life. We chatted about working with some of the musical theater greats like Jerome Robbins, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents! He tells us how he turned a Canadian magicians show into a Broadway Musical that ran over 5 years!!! Grover is pure joy and I know he isn't finished yet! He helps young dancers understand their craft and gives them guidance. Hurry up with that book Grover!

Welcome to the ‘Bar Chart’! The place where we make the cocktails, we drink here in the Rumpus Room.

On today’s show we enjoyed another fab cocktail named after one of the most gentlemanly gents in Hollywood history! A refreshing new favorite … The Doris Dear Cary Grant. Cary Grant makes you think of the words handsome and debonair and his movies invoke imagery of a perfect world where the stars of the silver screen drank Champagne and cocktails while gliding through life. As Cary Grant himself said,

“Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.” OHHHH Hollywood!

In real life Cary Grant's favorite cocktail was the classic martini (made with gin, naturally!). Author Ian Fleming was quite open about basing his famous character James Bond on Cary Grant which could explain why "Bond, James Bond," enjoys his martini shaken not stirred as well. Cary liked the classic “21 Club” in NYC and Apparently he liked gimlets but thought they were too sweet so the barman was asked by him to try this variation. So put on your stylish suit and tie, slick your hair back and enjoy this old classic brought to life again by me!!! Ladies and Gentlemen I present to you

THE DORIS DEAR CARY GRANT

Before we begin, Grover prefers his cocktails at night, so I prepared a simple non alcoholic drink instead which was a simple Limeade made of fresh lime juice and simple syrup shaken with ice and served up!

Now on to the alcoholic cocktail I enjoyed!

2 oz of Vodka
1 oz Lime juice
½ oz of simple syrup
½ oz of Tio Pepe Spanish Dry Sherry
Wedge of lime for garnish

Directions:
Fill a mixing glass with ice, add ingredients, shake well and serve in a chilled martini glass, with a wedge of lime for garnish.

Welcome back to Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk! First off I musty thank everyone for the amazing support. We won a SILVER Telly Award!!! WOW! I am so grateful! Now on to episode 5 of season 2!

I’m your hostess, Doris Dear, otherwise known as ‘Americas Perfect Housewife’. Good to see you back in the Rumpus Room! We are continuing our deep dive into Miss Arlen Dahl’s book “Always Ask a Man, Arlene Dahl’s Key to Femininity”. But before we do, here is a little bit of gossip about Miss Dahl. In 1956 Miss Dahl made some films in England for Columbia Pictures, one being “Wicked as They Come”. In March 1957 Arlene Dahl filed suit against Columbia for $1,000,000 claiming the advertising for the film was "obscene, degrading and offensive." She said she was humiliated by the use of composite drawings and photographs advertising the film. The case went to trial in May. The judge was unsympathetic during the hearing say he felt the photograph was refined and that Miss Dahl “looked better on film”!!! The case was dismissed that August

SO SIT BACK AND LET’S GO BACK TO 1965…

Chapter 16 is one of my favorites!!! It is titled “Instant Sex!”

This is the era of instant coffee, instant soup, and instant sex. Nobody has time anymore to start from scratch! This seems to be the pattern of today’s romance… packaged, precooked, frozen, ready to thaw and serve at a moment’s notice!!!

I gotta start going to a better supermarket!

What’s the hurry? What are we saving time for, if not for the leisurely enjoyment of all the thrilling stages of love- the kind that starts with the basic ingredients and is slowly simmered, stirred and tasted at frequent intervals to savor each additional seasoning – never allowed to come to a boil until all the ingredients have been blended to perfection…

<picks fan="" up=""> Whew… are we still talking about food or … I don’t know… </picks>

Continuing… The art of flirtation seems to have perished in our jet age. Before the advent of instant sex beautiful women courted attention by employing certain feminine accessories to entrance, entice, intrigue. The destinies of nations and their leaders have been altered by the drop of a handkerchief, the flutter of a fan. Why not revive these delightful customs of the past to stimulate romance!!! Delightful indeed. Perhaps the most subtle means of flirtation disappeared from our culture with the advent of air conditioning. I’m speaking of THE FAN! It’s language is universally understood!

Now… I never remember Taffy or any of her friends using a fan at parties or any other time! I can only imagine all of her friends fanning away in the Rumpus Room or out at a cocktail lounge fanning away!!! That would create quite a breeze!

Romance is an art and it is the woman’s role to create it!

There is an entire page of illustrations on how to use your fan! Here let’s try a few…

Wow… that’s so much work. I think I’ll just stick with my voice!!!

Next week we will finish up reading form Miss Dahl’s Book with some wonderful advice from some of her MALE movie star friends! You are going to love these! So mix up a great cocktail, sit back, get comfy and be transported BACK TO 1965 WITH DORIS DEAR AND ARLENE DAHL.

Oh who’s that!!! <cut guest="" segment="" to=""> Jana Robbins!!!!</cut>

<cut guest="" segment="" to="">We welcomed Jana Robbins, a Broadway actor as well as a Tony nominated and Olivier and Drama Desk Award winning Broadway and Off-Broadway producer, to the couch and chatted about life upon the stage and producing award winning hits! Her long varied career high notes include “Gypsy” on Broadway and acting as the lead producer of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF in Yiddish along with partner Hal Luftig and directed by Joel Grey! We also chat about our mothers and how much they mean to us and our lives. We of course sipped on a special cocktail I made just for this special interview... "The Doris Dear Rosalind Russell". Of course that sent us immediately into the discussion about Jana's amazing time working with Tyne Daly in the 1989 revival of Gypsy. What a joy to have Jana in the Rumpus Room. This is Broadway history! </cut>

Welcome to the ‘Bar Chart’! The place where we make the cocktails, we drink here in the Rumpus Room.

On today’s show we enjoyed a smooth, strong cocktail named after one of the most sophisticated stars in Hollywood history! Continuing our salute to drinks named after Hollywood stars I present A new favorite … The Doris Dear Rosalind Russell.

Rosalind Russell was an American actress, who earned four Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and received a special Academy Award in 1972. Rosalind Russell – who had started her career as a fashion model – was one of the leading ladies of stage and screen. She was, both in her personal life and film career, characterized as a sophisticated star. Russell had an extensive career that spanned over 40 years! One of Russel’s favorite drinking spots, when in New York, was The Stork Club. The Stork Club, which operated from 1929 to 1965, was one of the most prestigious clubs in the world. A symbol of café society, the wealthy elite, including movie stars, celebrities, showgirls, and aristocrats all mixed in the VIP Cub Room of the club. A famous oasis after the ravages of Prohibition, the Stork Club was the place for celebrities to see and be seen. One of my favorite stories concerning the Stork Club involves Evalyn Walsh McLean losing the Hope Diamond—all 45.52 karats!—at the Stork Club while wearing it out for a night on the town. You’ll never believe that it was later found underneath the table! I mean what were her hands doing that her ring came off under a table!? Another favorite is Ernest Hemingway cashing his $100,000 check for film rights to For Whom the Bell Tolls to settle his bill. It was Rosalind’s soon to be Danish father-in-law, actor Carl Brisson, who introduced her to an aquavit-based tipple devised by bartender Steve Hannigan at The Stork Club. After that first introduction, Rosalind Russell would commonly order this cocktail, that soon became her signature drink, made with aquavit and Vermouth! Now if you recall, last season I made a very special Old Fashioned using Aquavit, a wonderful liquor from Denmark that I discovered when I lived in Copenhagen. I’m such a world traveler! It is said that her favorite vermouth to be used by the bartenders at The Stork Club, was Dubonnet Blonde. The actress contributed the Rosalind Russell cocktail on to The Stork Club Bar Book, which was published in 1946. Well mixed (shaken over ice) it delivers a crisp and clean flavor to the palate, with a well-balanced and good bite of caraway. As Ros says in this 1946 book (read Quote) “My Father in law Carl Brisson introduced me to this drink and six months later I married his son!!!”

And now: The Doris Dear Rosalind Russell!

1 ½ oz Danish Aquavit
1 oz White Vermouth

Fill a shaker with ice, pour the ingredients over the ice and shake until nice and cold. Pour into a martini glass and enjoy!

Welcome back to Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk! I’m your hostess, Doris Dear, otherwise known as ‘Americas Perfect Housewife’. Good to see you back in the Rumpus Room!

TODAY we continue our deep dive into Miss Arlen Dahl’s book “Always Ask a Man, Arlene Dahl’s Key to Femininity”. I’m learning so much… are you??? You might not be familiar with her, but according to her book jacket, Arlene Dahl is an “internationally-famed motion picture, television and stage star who also writes a thrice weekly syndicated beauty column which reaches 30,000,000 readers. Known as one of the most beautiful women in the world herself, she has always been eager to help other women achieve their full potential of feminine appeal…. SO SIT BACK AND LET’S GO BACK TO 1965…

Enlarge your mental horizons by taking up new interests, new hobbies, new challenges. But never let your own interests override your husband’s. Let his job, his hobbies, his interests come first. There should be nothing that takes precedence in your day’s schedule over making yourself attractive and appealing for the man in your life. Service groups, bridge clubs, children’s activities, social events are all a part of the demands made upon a wife and mother, but nothing, nothing is more important than keeping your husband happy, interested and in love with you.

Soooooo … remember gals, if you don’t acquiesce to your husband he may not love you!?!? Ohhhh 1965

And now her advice on how married men and women should interact. Now may be a good time to take a sip of that cocktail!!!

I believe that marriage is not the place for Victorian attitudes. Anything that a husband and wife share – interests or actions – which increases their enjoyment and understanding of each other, is right and good. There are no set rules. A woman should wish to please her man in all ways, and be able to do so.

Hmmmm think of the positions Miss Dahl must have used over the years! So sounds like she maybe went to a few of those dark underground clubs we have all heard about over the water cooler!!! And I’m guessing self-pleasing is not allowed?????

She also makes a suggestion about a CERTAIN type of exercise. She says to contract the “lazy internal muscles. Do this whenever you can – sitting at the typewriter, before television, in a car, or reading. Developing these muscles will make it possible for you to be more responsive and pleasing to your husband.”

I’m contracting mine right now!!!

No wonder she had 5 husbands!!!

Taffy and Duke were really a couple people loved to be around. Both were quit something to look at! I remember watching them being in love. They were really something to see. And they truly respected each other and what they did. They seemed to have a healthy bedroom life… considering my sister Nancy and I used to listen at their door, from what I remember… They may have “played” the traditional role of husband and wife in public, but Duke never minded when Taffy word those pants!!!

We’ll have more wonderful musings from Miss Dahl in our next episode!! So mix up a great cocktail, sit back, get comfy and be transported BACK TO 1965 WITH DORIS DEAR AND ARLENE DAHL.

Oh who’s that!!!

T Oliver Reid dropped by the Rumpus Room and shared a cocktail with us to talk about his amazing 13 Broadway show career and his latest endeavors. T is a wonderful actor/singer/dancer and his career has been simply the dream of every person who dreams of working on Broadway. We talked about his growing up in a small town and singing in the choir and his first big call back and why he had to change into a dance belt in the back of a cab! I have had the great pleasure of knowing T for a long time and it was so wonderful having gin to visit!

Welcome to the ‘Bar Chart’! The place where we make the cocktails we drink here in the Rumpus Room.

On today’s show we enjoyed a smooth, blushing cocktail named after one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history! Continuing our salute to drinks named after Hollywood stars I present a new favorite … The Doris Dear Douglas Fairbanks. Hedda Hopper, THE original gossip columnist, in her 1952 autobiography “From Under My Hat” said.. “You can talk about your stars and their talents … but Douglas Fairbanks had something none of the rest ever possessed. It was a combination of good manners, looks, athletic skill, and extroverted charm. Doug loved everybody, and his infectious grin and easy way made everybody love him.” He was one of Hollywood’s founding fathers. In 1919, together with his best friend Charlie Chaplin, his bride-to-be Mary Pickford, and director DW Griffith, he started the United Artists studio. In 1927, Fairbanks was a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and hosted its first prizegiving ceremony in 1929. Doug helped to financially support the project of Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood and raised other important developments to improve movie production. Fairbanks demonstrated markedly progressive attitudes to race. In other films of the era, offensive racial terms and characterizations are depressingly familiar, but Fairbanks scoured his scripts for all such terms before production began and had them removed. He was apparently more than comfortable with public nudity. When he and Mary Pickford built their studio complex in the early 1920s, complete with a fully fitted gymnasium, exercise yard and steam room, Fairbanks requested an underground running track, so he could jog, naked, between scenes. The concrete-lined trench ran parallel to Santa Monica Boulevard for about two blocks, but six feet below the road. Hmmm sounds like a club I used to frequent! He was one of the silent-era film stars who risked life and limb doing their own stunts and was a true star! So to honor this great Hollywood personality, I present to you…

Welcome to Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk! I’m your hostess, Doris Dear, otherwise known as ‘Americas Perfect Housewife’. Good to see you back in the Rumpus Room!

Now in the last episode we read the opening letter Miss Arlen Dahl wrote for her book “Always Ask a Man, Arlene Dahl’s Key to Femininity” and I promised we would continue the journey through her book on each episode. Now for those not in the know, Arlene Dahl is the mother of that hunka hunka Lorenzo Lamas! MMMM remember him on Falcon Crest! SO SIT BACK AND LET’S GO BACK TO 1965…

"As a child, I turned to my father for final approval in matters of beauty and fashion. If he didn’t like a new dress, it went straight back to the store. My father loved the smell of lavender soap, so I always made certain that I used it lavishly before I presented myself to him for a goodnight kiss"

Ummmmm , ummmmm, uhhhhh let’s keep reading…

"All truly feminine women have one basic quality in common. They like men. Male company can make a woman feel warm and content, glamorous and exuberant, interested and interesting…."

These next parts are where it gets especially good:

"NEVER upstage a man. Don’t top his joke, even if you have to bite your tongue to keep from doing it. Never launch loudly into your own opinions on a subject – whether it’s petunias or politics. (heaven forbid!) Instead, draw out his ideas to which you can gracefully add your footnotes from time to time…In a restaurant, let your mate or date do the ordering. It’s more fun to eat hot dogs with a man than caviar by yourself. (well… really???) You may know more about vintage wines than the wine steward, but if you’re smart, you’ll let your man do the choosing and be ecstatic over his selection, even if it tastes like shampoo."

Ohhhh myyyy…. Well there you have it. Subservient and quiet is the way to go according to Miss Dahl! And I guess shampoo is a nice dipping sauce for an hors d’oevre!!??

Now I will say that my mom Taffy had her ways with men. She would sit there at Dukes feet with all their guests around and she would listen to every word he said. She knew the time to pounce! She used her quiet time to plan out her attack! LOL OHHHHH Taffy!

Remember… an interested woman is interesting!!!

Well, I think you get the idea. Oh, there’s even more coming in our next episode!! So mix up a great cocktail, sit back, get comfy and be transported BACK TO 1965 WITH DORIS DEAR AND ARLENE DAHL.

The one and only fabulous actress Anita Gillette stopped by the Rumpus Room to share stories of her long career on Broadway, in TV and Film! What a joy she is. Adorable and full of great backstage stories.

From working with Ethel Merman, to Irving Berlin, to sharing her sitcom set with a monkey, Anita was full of glad tidings. Of course no interview with Anita would be complete without talking about her star turning roll in "Moonstruck"!!! How luck am I to have such gifted wonderful friends! Of course we sipped a yummy cocktail I thought would be fitting for Anita... The Doris Dear Mary Pickford"! A delicious concoction for for such a star! So let's head over to the "Bar Cart" and see how its made!!!

On todays show we enjoyed a smooth, blushing cocktail named after one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history! Continuing our salute to drinks named after Hollywood stars I present a new favorite … The Doris Dear Mary Pickford. Now let me say this… I am sure most don’t remember this amazing Hollywood star and shaker, but let me tell you… you need to look her up! She was a powerhouse woman of Hollywood! Mary Pickford, was the first female Hollywood superstar. Known in her early career as “the Biograph Girl”, “Blondilocks”, “the girl with the curls”, she eventually attained the title of “Queen of the Movies”, or better yet, “America’s Sweetheart”. Men wanted to marry her; women wanted to be her best friend. She and Charlie Chaplin were THE stars of their time! She was one of the earliest stars to be billed under her own name. She co-founded the distribution company United Artists offering independent film producers access to its screens. As a co-founder, as well as the producer and star of her own films, Pickford became the most powerful woman who has ever worked in Hollywood. She was also a co-founder of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences! This cocktail is said to have been created for her in the 1920s by a bartender who fled to Cuba during Prohibition and worked at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba on a trip she took to Havana with Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks (who’s drinks we also celebrate). But after my deep research, none of that made sense. First of all the Hotel mentioned didn’t open until 1930’s and actually under that name until 1939! So… After even more research… whew… it seems the story is completely untrue. Yes it was a cocktail invented in the 20’s, probably in Cuba, but she never went there with Chaplin or Fairbanks, but even so… it was a hugely popular cocktail, most likely invented in Cuba, full of tropical flavors. It seems to have first appeared in print in the 1928 published book by British playwright and journalist Basil Woon which captured the energy that took hold of Havana, as Americans flocked by the thousands to drink, gamble and party amid the tropical beauty that is Cuba during prohibition! So I present to you my version of this delish blushing cocktail…

Welcome to Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk! I’m your hostess, Doris Dear, otherwise known as ‘Americas Perfect Housewife’. Good to see you back in the Rumpus Room!

Now, I promised a look into one of my favorite books to peruse “Always Ask a Man, Arlene Dahl’s Key To Femininity” written in 1965 by Hollywood starlet Arlene Dahl. One of my favorite movies of hers was “Journey to the Center of the Earth” with James Mason and Pat Boone! Yes … that Pat Boone! Near the end she is laying in a large dish being pushed up through the volcano and looks like she is having sex with the wind. Hilarious! You go girl!

Now this book is a fascinating read full of so called advice for woman and finding a man. So to start it off, this book has a copy of a hand written letter to her readers. You must hear this… SO SIT BACK AND LET’S GO BACK TO 1965…

“Dear Reader,

I like men. And I like men to like me – so I dress for them.

Oh she rhymed!

This I used to consider the normal attitude and approach, one I shared with all women.

Then not long ago a survey showed me that the average woman doesn’t dress to please men at all! She dresses to please herself or other women…

That fact shocked me into writing this book, “Always Ask a Man.” “

So our dear Arlene wants all the gals out there to dress for men never herself. We need to consider the man first and foremost for the world to progress. They’re terribly ignored and repressed by society on a daily basis. I think THAT tells us just where this book might go… ok continuaing…

Most women love to be beautiful. (At least the ones who write me for advice do.) Millions of dollars, the statisticians tell us, are spent yearly at beauty salons, cosmetics counters, gymnasiums, and dress shops in woman’s quest for beauty. But beauty for whom? The girls in the office? The women at the club? How can the world progress if women don’t consider men…the man…first?

Oh wait … there’s more! And this is just the opening remember…!

This book is not intended for women that want to be beautiful for beauty’s sake. Such beauty serves no purpose…other than self-satisfaction, if that can be considered a purpose. But if you are a woman that longs to be beautiful for and be loved by a man, I believe this book can help you.

<cough cough=""> I have always said that doing things for yourself is so very selfish! Now Miss Dahl finishes her opening note with this nugget: </cough>

Whether you are a student, housewife, mother, working girl or businesswoman, to me the only role that really counts is that of being an exciting feminine woman! Yours for beauty, Arlene Dahl

Well, I think you get the idea. Oh, it’s full of great stuff! Each show I will be sharing some simply wonderful nuggets from this fab book. So mix up a great cocktail, sit back, get comfy and be transported BACK TO 1965 WITH ARLENE DAHL. Tune in each week for a little bit of fun. And don’t forget, you can find all these stories on my website at www.dorisdear.com/Gurl-Talk all one word.

Oh who’s that!!! <cut guest="" segment="" to=""> Blake Allen!!!</cut><cut guest="" segment="" to=""></cut>

Blake is an accomplished composer, musician and he wrote the theme to this show!!! Blake and I have worked together when he invited me to host one of his fab concerts as part of his "An Evening With... Series... the Doris Day Show and also sing in his Sinatra show! He has his chart topping album "Sonatas" has reached great heights on the Apple Classical charts as well as the Billboard charts! We chatted about his artistic life and being married to politician and drag icon Marti Gould Cummings. He is a fab guy and I loved that he came into the Rumpus Room to drink and chat!

On today’s show Blake and I saluted the old Hollywood stars through cocktails by enjoying a refreshing new favorite … The Doris Dear Charlie Chaplin.

This pre-Prohibition cocktail, mostly forgotten in modern times, is rich and indulgent enough to evoke old Hollywood glamour from the silent era of movies. It was invented at New York City’s Waldorf Astoria hotel prior to prohibition, and was included in Albert Stevens Crockett’s 1934 “The Old Waldorf Astoria Bar Book,” published 2 years after prohibition ended.

This is a gin-based drink which originally was extremely sweet due to the combination of ingredients used, especially the Sloe Gin. Now, I have a bit of a history with Sloe Gin! My dad, Duke, used to make “Sloe Gin Fizzes” for us before we took our dates to senior prom in high school! We thought we were so grown-up drinking that heavily sweet dark red concoction my dad Duke would shake up. Don’t worry, most were legal age to drink by senior proms back then! Well, most of us anyway!

Sloe gin is made from ripe sloes, a relative of the plum, which are traditionally picked after the first frost of winter (late October to early November in the northern hemisphere). Each sloe is pricked, traditionally with a thorn taken from the blackthorn bush on which they grow. OH THOSE THORNEY BUSHES! Then soaked in gin with sugar added to extract the juice of the fruit. There is a sloe gin competition is held each January in The Pandy Inn, Dorstone, Herefordshire, in the UK with the winner crowned the "Grand Master of the Sloes". I don’t know if you get a crown, but I sure would hope so! Love to see that!

Now, as always, I like creating my own version of the drinks I love, and I created a special version of this one. This is a not-as-sweet version of this classic pre prohibition cocktail! … so let’s get on with it!

Ladies and Gents, I present to you….

The Doris Dear Charlie Chaplin

You will need:

½ oz Sloe Gin
2/3 oz oz Dry Gin
¾ oz lime juice
½ oz Apricot Brandy

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Pop on the top and shake until blended. Strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a lime twist and enjoy!

Well I hope you enjoyed your stay in the Rumpus Room today..

I love when friends drop by and we share some fun ideas and bring some joy to the world around us. Stay safe and hugs and love from Doris Dear … and remember…

See you soon… CHEERS!
Doris Dear, The Perfect American Housewifetag:www.dorisdear.com,2005:Post/66183942021-04-30T15:57:24-04:002021-05-05T12:02:31-04:00Pattern! Pattern! Pattern! Gurl Talk Season 2 Episode 1
Hi Dears! Welcome to the premier episode of season 2 of Doris Dear’s Gurl Talk! I’m your hostess, Doris Dear, otherwise known as ‘Americas Perfect Housewife’. So good to see you back in the Rumpus Room!

Has this been a year! We never expected the world to change so quickly did we! You know, my mother Taffy told me that when time goes quickly it’s because your getting old! LOL Well there ya go! This season’s shows are going to be so much fun and we have some great guests lined up for you! Of course there will be more cocktail recipes, this season they are all based on old Hollywood stars! Hmmmm starting to think “OLD” is a theme! And I am going to be sharing some hilarious thoughts from a favorite book of mine written by a Hollywood star in 1965 … the one and only “Always Ask A Man, Arlene Dahl’s Key to Femininity”! Just wait to you hear this stuff!

<show video=""> </show>I hope you enjoyed watching my dear nephews sing and dance there way through my theme song! They make Auntie Doris proud!!! Stars in the making!

You know music has truly played a special part of this pandemic. Artists started singing from their apartments, their kitchens and in front of their shower curtains while quarantining and finding ways to make their art live.

Now of course music was a BIG part of growing up on Staten Island with my parents Taffy and Duke. There was always music playing in the Rumpus Room. Lots of big band albums and CBS Masterworks Broadway albums! Of course my sister Nancy would be waiting to hear the call when Taffy would call her down to the party and have her sing her best rendition of “Chattanooga Choo Choo”. She would stand on top of the cocktail table down there and do her bit! It was always met with a rousing cheer from the crowd, and she would return upstairs with some yummy treats from the buffet that Taffy would put out! As the great Jane Austen said… “Without music, life would be a blank to me.” How true!

So I hope your ready for a fun season 2 of Doris Dear’s Gurl talk. Mix up a great cocktail, sit back, get comfy and tune in each week for a little bit of fun. And don’t forget, you can find all stories on my website at www.dorisdear.com/Gurl-Talk all one word.

The simply grand <cut guest="" segment="" to="">Gregg Barnes came into the Rumpus Room to talk all about his phenomenal work he has done on Broadway as an award winning Costume Designer. His journey as an artist and his backstage stories are wonderful. I do hope you enjoyed listening as much as I enjoyed chatting with him. Of course we drank a fab cocktail ... "The Doris Dear Ginger Rogers"! </cut>

Welcome to the ‘Bar Chart’! The place where we make the cocktails we drink here in the Rumpus Room.

On todays show we saluted the old Hollywood stars through cocktails by enjoying a refreshing new favorite … The Doris Dear Ginger Rogers! This drink has many variations, but is based on the original drink which was called “The Favorite Cocktail” from one of the first drink books ever published “DRINKS” by Jacques Straub. Jacques Straub was the wine steward of the Blackstone hotel, and considered one of the foremost wine experts in the world. For thirty-two years Mr. Straub studied wine and its making from every conceivable angle. He made wine and distillation a life study. Originally from Switzerland, he came to the US and became Wine Steward and Club Manager of the famous Pendennis Club of Louisville, Ky., Where he was employed for over 20 years.

Now you may remember that we talked about the Pendennis Club last season when I presented my “Doris Dear Old Fashioned” variation. The Old Fashioned is considered by many to be invented at the Pendennis Club! Hmmmm…. So does that mean the Mr Straub invented the Old Fashioned… hmmmmm could be!

Now, when the Blackstone Hotel of Chicago was built, Mr Straub was asked to establish their wine cellars so he continued his career there. In 1913 he wrote the book, “DRINKS” and became one of the first true cocktail recipe books widely sold. This slim little bookcontains over 700 recipes, including a surprising number of drinks that were thought to have been invented later.

It’s a great one!

As always, I like creating my own version of the drinks I love, and I created a special version… The Doris Dear Ginger Rogers! This is a refreshing take on a drink that has many variations, but I do love it. It has often been said that Ginger Rogers had a certain “earthiness” to her and well so does this great drink. Just like the famous actress and Fred Astaire partner, this drink slides across your taste buds like a waltz on a Hollywood glass floor. … so let’s get on with it!

Ladies and Gentlemen… I present.. The Doris Dear Ginger Rodgers!

You will need:

Several springs of fresh mint
Juice of a lime
1 large jigger of good dry gin
Ginger beer

Now, for those looking for a “lighter” ginger beer with a deeper flavor and 46% less calories, I like using this … Fever-Tree Refreshingly Light Ginger Beer. It has less suger and No artificial Sweetners. I also use their Light Tonic Water in all my tonic based drinks as well for the same reasons!

Crush or muddle the mint leaves in the lime juice. Fill the glass with ice and pour the gin over the ice and muddled mint and lime. Fill with ginger beer and CHEERS! A great fresh earthy cocktail for those Hollywood evenings … or days if u like!

My mom and dad, Taffy and Duke, truly were the classic mid-century modern couple! They SEEMED perfect! They went through “stuff” But they always focused on how much they truly loved each other. I learned from the best! Taffy taught me that to make it in the world you must be a strong independent woman. Because that’s what she was. You know, Taffy went to work when I was in the 7th grade. She took a part time job in one of the BIG BANKS . One day she showed up in a wonderful lime green pant suit and matching scarf around her head. The VP of the bank came running down and told her she had to go home immediately and change into something more appropriate for a woman at work and certainly NOT PANTS! Well, Taffy marched out of the bank, noticed a pay phone in front of the bank and with a twinkle in her eye, got on a pay phone and called the local papers. Now who do u think was on the cover of the style section that weekend and don’t you know Taffy was back working at that bank the following week wearing that Green pantsuit and matching scarf around her head! That’s Taffy! That’s my mom.

“Style is everything, STYLE is what gets u up in the morning! “

Taffy had so much to say and teach and I wrote it all down in this little book. You know she gave up her career in modeling for her family. She was proud to raise and take care of her family and never was she embarrassed that she was “Just a Housewife”.. She never understood why some thought it was something bad “only” raising a family. … But I kept her notes with me at all times and well, I’m sharing them with you now! … needless to say they are a slightly different view of the world we live in now…

Taffy was great at so many things… cooking, mother, wife, gardener… but I will say that being a housewife wasn’t always easy. You sometimes felt under appreciated. But Duke always made sure that he told her how much he loved her and how important she was to our family…. And to the world! I mean Taffy was a staunch believer that EVERYONE was equal and deserved equal rights no matter what! Taffy was truly loved. As was I…

There was a knock on the door and lo and behold it's Broadway Diva Karen Mason! Karen sits down on the couch with me and we have a great chat about her long history of Broadway shows and tells some greta backstage stories. Karen is a blast and you will love this conversation as we sip on a favorite retro cocktail...

The Doris Dear Sidecar!

I have to admit… my go to drink in winter is the delicious SIDECAR! I adore this cocktail. I tend to like sweeter drinks and this warms my bones and tickles my taste buds!

The Ritz Hotel in Paris France claims origin of the drink. The first recipes for the Sidecar appear in a 1922 cocktail book. Of course, it is also contained in my cocktail bible “The Esquire Cocktail Book”. It’s a rather simple drink of Cognac or brandy, Cointreau or some other triple sec and lemon juice. A sugar rim tops it off and down it goes! I love sitting in front of a fire and sipping this while feasting on a lovely board of meats and cheeses. Yummy! Now on to the drink!

To a shaker full of ice, add

1 ½ oz brandy
¾ oz Cointreau
¾ oz lemon juice

Shake vigorously and Strain into a saucer glass with a sugar rim

Sip this one slowly… you don’t want to finish it fast!!

Well I hope you enjoyed your stay in the Rumpus Room today..

Welcome back to the Rumpus Room! I’ve just been going through some of my old Broadway record albums. Boy, the Rumpus Room was always rocking with these albums when Taffy and Duke had friends over!

Now today, I am so excited to share with you some super fun food history. You know growing up on Staten Island with my parents Taffy and Duke and my sister Nancy was a barrel of fun! Taffy and Duke really enjoyed life and lived it out loud! Let me tell you… that Rumpus room was swingin’ all night on a Saturday evening. All their friends would come over all dressed up and my sister Nancy and I would sneak down the stairs and listen to all the giggling and the laughing and the tinkling of the ice as the Manhattan’s and Whiskey sours were poured as they listened to those Broadway record albums.

Now mom and dad loved going into the city to see shows and go out to eat, and they both were amazing cooks. They loved discovering new dishes in restaurants and then recreating their versions at home. Taffy often said that the way to a man’s heart was through his stomach… and Duke loved to eat! I mean everything from jello molds to grand buffets, the rumpus room always had good food around and of course there was always that relish tray!!! But boy she loved discovering new food. Later in life, my sister would do the same thing… oh Nancy loved her crock pot!

Now we must remember that back then there were not all these different ethnic foods on every corner. Even Italian restaurants were exotic in the 60’s! But Taffy and Duke loved bringing us to the city to enjoy those wonderful meals in all those fancy eating establishments. When we got home of course mother would start looking for the dishes we ate so she could recreate them. And she would of course go the her ‘BIBLE’ - Better Homes and Gardens Famous Foods From Famous places! On of my favs was of course going to The Top of the Fair at the 1964-65 World’s Fair! Oh, the fair was so marvy wasn’t it. Full of wonder and dreams of the future. Who knew the future would be what 2020 looks like!

Top of the Fair was glorious. Glass enclosed, suspended high above the fair where you could actually see the NYC skyline! Oh, how I marveled being there. The Chef was Charles Peponakis, who apparently, was very famous for his ‘Chocolate Three Way”. Now… I’m not sure if Taffy had any 3 ways in her kitchen, but well, one never knows! LOL…

In the book Chef Peponakis shares his classic take on Sauerbraten! We actually had that when we ate there, and I thought I was so fancy eating something from another country like that! Now I thought we were getting something like SAURKRAUT! Who knew it was meat and the NATIONAL DISH OF GERMANY! And … it came with ‘Gingersnap Gravy’.. talk about exotic! Oh I remember how good it smelled!

AND … Well this is a classic example of my sister Nancy’s cooking. She took this recipe, added some booze to it, popped it all into a crock pot…and VOILA! A feast for her family! Sooooo good!

My guest was the marvy young man Aaron Kimmel. A graduate of Julliard and fantastic jazz drummer. He is my neighbor and he graciously agreed to come over to the Rumpus Room and chat about his career and touring experiences and how Covid has changed all that. What great guy. Of course we sipped on our marvelous Doris Dear cocktail of the moment... The Doris Dear Grapefruit Margarita!

Welcome to the ‘Bar Chart’! The place were we make the cocktails we drink here in the Rumpus Room.

On todays show we enjoyed a refreshing favorite … The Margarita! The margarita is related to a popular Mexican and American drink, the Daisy, margarita is Spanish for "daisy", remade with tequila instead of brandy. It became popular during Prohibition as people drifted over the border for alcohol.

Now, as always I look to my cocktail Bible, The Esquire Drink Book, and lo and behold… The first known publication of a margarita recipe was in the December 1953 issue of Esquire, with a recipe calling for an ounce of tequila, a dash of triple sec and the juice of half a lime or lemon.

Now, as always, I like creating my own version of the drinks I love, and I created a special version… The Doris Dear Grapefruit Margarita! This a refreshing take on a classic… so lets get on with it!

You pour that into your shaker filled with ice

5 oz Red Grapefruit juice
4 oz white tequila
1 ½ oz triple sec
½ oz simple syrup

Shake it up and pour into a glass filled with ice. Add a grapefruit slice… and there it is! A yummy refreshing cocktail for those steamy summer evenings! or days if u like!

Well I hope you enjoyed your stay in the Rumpus Room today..

Welcome back to the Rumpus Room!

My mom, Taffy, was a true Irish Beauty. Dark hair, bright blue eyes and later in life bright blonde hair! Oh she was a sight to behold on the tennis court. Taffy, well, she was the ultimate glamorous suburban mother and housewife. Always dressed au courant, always knowing just what to do and say. Taffy was PERFECTION!

I remember the day she announced she was taking me to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the Monet waterlily exhibit and then lunch. Oh my dears, imagine how excited I was. A little girl like me finally seeing the big city! So we put on our most beautiful outfits and hopped into Taffy’s fab yellow mustang convertible. Wrapped a silk kerchief on our heads and off to the train, otherwise known as the “Staten Island Turtle”, fastest train in the 5 boroughs! Hopped on the train that finally got us to the Staten Island ferry, best free ride in town. We chugged across the mighty Hudson while I enjoyed my first NY pretzel and root beer soda! Then, there we were... the big Island of Manhattan. Oh I was so excited! As I took my first steps, mother declared we were taking a subway! Well, this WAS an adventure! So we went underground and took a subway, we arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Oh I'll never forget walking up those stairs, through those mighty doors. Of course, I dropped my quarter into the donation box at the door and the guard gave me my little button that said I gave! I’m still a giver today!!! and then off to see the Monet Water Lilies! There we stood, staring at those glorious Monet paintings, I had never seen such beautiful paintings and those colors ... lilac and purple… so lovely. Taffy adored those paintings. I mean everything in Taffy’s bedroom was LILAC! The ceiling, the walls, the bedspread, the shag carpeting… she even had lilac potpourri! Then it was off to lunch, downstairs at the amazing “Dorotheum” restaurant.

Do you remember the Dorotheum Restaurant? What a glorious place with its oversized Birdcage Chandeliers and reflecting pool with bronze water sprites skipping across. Oh, a gurl like me never experienced such glamour! Designed by the amazing Dorothy Draper. Taffy said she was ordering the perfect lunch for a blossoming woman in training... a Rock Cornish Hen...! She proceeded to teach me eating etiquette in public;. That was the day, she said, that I was going to learn about being a proper grown up WOMAN!

That was Taffy… my mom!

My special guest in todays episode was the Broadway star of "Phantom of the Opera" Maree Johnson, who plays Madame Giry! We spoke about the beginnings of her career in Australia as a swing in "les Miserable" and then playing the lead part, Christina, in "Phantom". Maree also shared the deeply personal story of her entire family contracting Covid and how it affected them. Maree is a joy to sit with and she even brought a special cake known in Australia... The "Lamingtons"! These delicious desserts were cake and chocolate and coconut! It was a perfect treat for or chat! They are truly fab and you can go here to see the recipe that is Maree's favorite!

While we chatted, we sipped on one of my favorite cocktails. The 'Pimm's Cup'!

I was a very lucky gal and was invited to the ASCOT RACES last year! What an absolute joy it was seeing all those people dressed in there fancy hats and morning suits. And there I stood as the Queen Mother and the Royal family passed just feet away from me in the Royal Coach! Now… I am sure that the Queen Mother waved at me! I mean how could she not! What was really marvelous was after the races everyone gathers around the bandstand as the band played songs and the huge crowds of people sing along. And with those songs I was introduced to the traditional drink of Wimbledon… Pimm’s Cup. What a joyous day it was as I sipped my fruity sweet libation singing along with my Scottish friends and the thousands of people there. James Pimm, the owner of a London oyster bar, invented the drink sometime between 1823 and 1840. The original version featured gin, quinine, and various herbs, and it reportedly aided digestion. The sweet libation is the signature drink of the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament, where the first Pimm’s bar opened in 1971, but it is also enjoyed widely across Britain in the summer months. Now, I would look this up in my cocktail bible, The Esquire Drink Book, but this isn’t in there! So I had to go on my memories of my day at the races. But enough chatter… lets create the Doris Dear Pimm’s Cup!

To a tall glass full of ice add:

2 oz Pimms Cup
3 oz 7up
Cucumber slice
Strawberry
Orange slice
Lemon slice
Mint leaves

stir and garnish with fruit!

Doris Dear, The Perfect American Housewifetag:www.dorisdear.com,2005:Post/64812482020-11-20T20:50:00-05:002022-03-30T14:15:45-04:00Doris Dear's Gurl Talk Episode 3!
<hollywood advice="" on="" stars="" women=""> </hollywood>Hi Everyone, Doris Dear, America’s Perfect Housewife here! Welcome back to the Rumpus Room!

You have heard me talk about my parents Taffy and Duke and growing up in the Rumpus Room in our house on Staten Island. Well… they were really something. Taffy always told me I could have any life I wanted. I asked mom how do I find that someone to make my dreams come true like you found Duke? And of course she pointed me right to her stack of magazines! I asked her… “Better Homes and Gardens is going to get me a man?”, and she said “No! Better Homes and Gardens will help you KEEP a man but to find one you look for advice from the HOLLYWOOD MAGAZINES!!!” YEAH…. Because those Hollywood types really know the secret to long happy marriages!!! Oh yes, like

The star with the perpetual tan... oh, George Hamilton, remember him. Well Dears he says… “A woman is often like a strip of film, insignificant, until a man puts a light behind her!” Or the bald one! The King and I, Yul Brenner, here he is on the cover of Colliers magazine. well he says… “The one thing a woman doesn’t have to be is logical!” Hmmmmm

Now Taffy NEVER had problems attracting handsome men! Duke after all, was a star athlete and Taffy was a successful model in her day. She appeared on the runways and in the magazines… a true beauty, tall and statuesque for her day. She was a 5 foot 8 beauty. She was told by her agents to NOT worry about those glaring “defects” like her height, instead turn those defects into assets! Adopt the daring fashions of the day. Carry yourself like a queen! Well as you can see I follow that bit of advice to the T!!! When Taffy married Duke, it really seemed like they had everything. They were 2 of the most beautiful people, the model and the athlete. I loved watching them be in love. Taffy adored Duke. Now you know Taffy gave up her modeling career for Duke. He made all her dreams come true.

Taffy and Duke truly were in love. They loved together, they drank together and boy did they smoke together! Taffy would rather fight than switch! But remember… it was good for you back then! I would watch her sit next to Duke and listen to every word he said.

“An interested woman, is interesting!!!” That was Taffy… and that’s my mom!

We were visited by the amazing jazz trumpeter and crooner, Benny Benack III. He has been a force here in NYC. He showed up wearing a gorgeous purple pinstripe custom suit! The mans got style! These days singing and playing on the streets on NYC with all the other artists, waiting for the day we can all go back inside the clubs! He talked about his musical family, that has had generations of musicians and teachers in the arts! We talked about his concert I attended at Dizzy's at Lincoln Center where his dad showed up to play with him! His grandfather is famous for writing the song for The Pittsburg Pirates sports team!!! This a guy to watch.. he is bringing fab music to all of us!

We sat and enjoyed a wonderful cocktail that I thought he would enjoy, and he did! Benny knocked it back!!! The Doris Dear’s AQUAVIT OLD FASHIONED! Another favorite drink. It is said that this wonderful simple cocktail, The Old Fashioned, was invented by a bartender in Louisville, Kentucky at the Pendennis Club in 1881. Named the “old fashioned” because people wanted to harken back to simpler drinks from the olden days! Hmmmm … sounds like 2020!! In fact, this is the official cocktail for the city of Louisville and they celebrate the drink each year during the “old fashioned fortnight” celebration. Sounds like Doris needs to visit then!

Consulting my bible of cocktail making, The Esquire Drink Book for 1956, it is an easy cocktail to make consisting of lemon, sugar whiskey and bitters. I was lucky enough to live in Denmark, and while I was there, I discovered a wonderful liquor called Aquavit! It is distilled from grain and potato’s with caraway or dill seed! And what a surprise to find out that Aquavit is used in an old Fashioned in Denmark! So, here is my recipe for The Doris Dear Aquavit Old Fashioned!

To a shaker filled with ice add…

1 ½ oz Aquavit
1 oz Rye Whiskey
1 tsp Maple Syrup
1 dash orange angostura Bitters

Shake, strain into a glass with a large ice cube garnish with an orange twist! ENJOY! Cheers!

Doris Dear, The Perfect American Housewifetag:www.dorisdear.com,2005:Post/64744022020-11-13T21:00:00-05:002022-03-30T14:15:25-04:00Doris Dear's Gurl Talk episode 2!
Hi Everyone, Doris Dear, America’s Perfect Housewife here! Welcome back to the Rumpus Room!

I was going through some of my books that Taffy, my mother, gave me so I could grow up to be the perfect Housewife. Today I am so excited because I get to share with you a book that I simply adore.

You know, having a marvelous mother is a gift isn't it? I mean when you’re a young person, you don’t really realize how special our mom’s are. Well I can tell you I had the best. She was glamorous and super smart. Taffy passed on to me many things during those wonderful glamorous suburban days, especially her love of reading. Taffy said that nothing looked better than your husband coming home and seeing u curled up on the sofa with a good book in your lap! She said Tolstoy was a good choice, show's him you "know things". Now Taffy didn’t need books to show she was smart… oh no… she was very smart. Believe me. Well, Taffy introduced me to this marvelous writers works when I was just a young gal, getting ready for the wonderful life ahead. This author has written close to a dozen books and countless magazine articles for Co-Ed Magazine. This author really spoke to me back then and still speaks to me today… along with all the other voices in my head! I was hoping to share with you a little something that she penned. The author’s name, and I’m sure many here have heard her name before, is the one and only “GAY HEAD”! It’s true darlings... Gay Head! NOW, I read from her best seller “Party Perfect”, something Taffy surely knew how to do!

Look at that cover darlings. Aren't those kids having fun? And look at that, a nice relish tray on the bar. Nothing says party like olives and celery! Now this book IS one of my Bibles. It is chock-a-block full of marvelous ideas for the kids. My absolute favorite that I share with you today, and I KNOW u gals out there have been to a few of these... is the ever popular ‘PAJAMA PARTY! Don’t u just love those? Gay says that a party that is “BOY-LESS” IS NOT “FUN-LESS”! She says to invite your most congenial girl friends that are willing and able to cum!!!! (very important) And don’t worry there are lots of activities you can do like… Give home permanents! Because that always turns out well, still trying to get the frizz out of this Toni. Whip up a batch of candies! Hot boiling sugar is a girl’s best friend! Or the popular, and I know the kids will love doing this on a Saturday night… have an all-night study group! You gotta wonder what they are all studying at that late hour! But don’t worry about where all those lovely ladies are going to sleep. Miss Head suggests maybe you pick one or two of ur pettiest friends and ask them to share the bed with you! Hmmm yes Dears..... And where will the rest of ur friends sleep? Not to worry, just throw some rubber mats down on the floor and make sure to have plenty of soap! You know, I have often wondered why so much soap is needed, but HEY… Don’t question the Gay! Ladies and Gentlemen, “Party Perfect.”

Now, I MUST tell you a quick story. I was doing one of my live shows in a theater and when I held this book up I heard a loud gasp from the audience. Afterward, my dear friend John said he couldn’t believe that I had that book! He said that his mother was the editor of CO-ED Magazine back in the day, and whoever the editor was they wrote under the name of Gay Head! He said his MOTHER actually wrote this book and used to read it to him when he was a child!!!~ A small world!

There was a knock on my door and who do you think came in but the simply amazing Meg Flather! Meg is an author, Home Shopping host and singer/songwriter. We caught up with how we are dealing in this new Covid World. Meg told stories of growing cup in the Philippines! Stories of her family moving there and have local nannies hold her and enshrine their love of music in Meg as a child. We discussed her book "Home Shopping Diva" (available on Amazon) and had so much fun together. we sipped our way through the Doris Dear Whiskey Sour!

Welcome to the BAR CART! This is one of the most popular places in the Rumpus Room. I love whipping up a good yummy cocktail for my guests. Today we enjoyed a marvy Whiskey Sour, one of my most favorite drinks.

Now, did you know that “Whiskey” has 2 spelling variations… and that depends where the whiskey is distilled! Whisky, no e, refers to Scottish, Canadian, or Japanese grain spirits. Whiskey, with an ey refers to grain spirits distilled in Ireland and the United States.

So today we are using “whisky” with a ‘Y’ namely Dewar’s, which is a a blended Scotch Whisky from Scotland and it is what Taffy and Duke used as well!

Now, there are many variations of the Whiskey sour… a little egg white on top it becomes a ‘Boston Sour”, a dash of red wine on top… a New York Sour… but all in all it is really just… as my go to cocktail bible … The Esquire Drink Book says… a fortified lemonade!! Makes sense.. it’s basically a mixture of sugar and lemon juice mixed with some good booze.

Now this recipe in the book uses granulated sugar but , well it is a new century darlings so I created my own Doris Dear variation!

Fill your shaker up with ice, add the ingredients

We need fresh lemon juice… ¾ oz
¾ oz simple syrup
I like to make my own simple syrup. It’s a simple combination of 2 parts sugar to one part water. You mix that in a pot, boil it to dissolve the sugar crystals and let it cool. Put in a bottle and keep in a refrigerator. And u can make all sorts of variations of syrups using different types of sugars. For this recipe I decided to use demerara sugar. This type of sugar has a large grain and a slight toffee flavor! I love it in my cocktails.
2 oz of Dewar’s, yes I know it’s a “Scotch Whisky” meaning whisky from Scotland, but it’s what Taffy and Duke used
Shake and strain over a nice glass of ice. Add an orange slice and 2, aren’t I decadent, maraschino cherries and enjoy!

Now I know things may still feel a little rough out there, but I'm here to tell you we're going to be ok. How do I know? Well, for those that haven't heard, I was brought up on Staten Island by Taffy and Duke, my parents. And they lived through some tough times ya know. The Great Depression, a few wars, Watergate, the polio vaccine - all kinds of crazy stuff. But they taught me to find what works, to persevere, and to live life to the fullest no matter what the circumstances. And I certainly live out loud! So here in the Rumpus Room, were safe, and having a good time with friends and colleagues. We’re going to share some laughs, find some bright spots and spread some joy and I know you’re going to love it. They love having parties in the Rumpus room! They certainly knew how to live the best life!

I love looking back at my old magazines. Of course my fav is what I like to call ‘the bible of the American housewife’ - Better Homes and Gardens! Now todays issue is from May 1959. What I find interesting is that so many of the articles really to seem like things we would read today! For example, this issue is all about camping and taking long car trips! Sounds like what so many of my social-distancing friends are doing right now! I mean look at this great article about camping! It says… ‘these family’s have one thing in common… there all a bit crazy… about camping we mean! LOL oh… funny! Now this article talks about the National Campers and Hikers association. A group dedicated to it all things camping. I looked it up and now they are called the FCRV (Family Campers & RVers) … I bet that a fun group!

My fav article though is this one about dieting! We all put on a few “covid pounds” and may of my girlfriends are trying to lose weight. Well I have the perfect thing right here… the Wesson Oil MIRICLE DIET! You see they consulted some of the world's most eminent nutritionists at the time who said… “it's so nutritionally sound you can live on it for weeks! In fact you can lose 14 ½ pounds in 28 days and still feel “fit as a fiddle”!!! Imagine that! I think everyone has all the ingredients right in their own pantry. You just mix Wesson Oil, raw eggs, a touch of orange juice and reconstituted skim milk and you just have to drink that 7 times a day! MMMM sounds wonderful! … I’m just guessing with all that oil the pounds are literally sliding right through you!!!

I’ll be looking back at lots of these old magazines and books I have… let me tell you, there is some very fun and informative things in them, and I can’t wait to share them with you. And don’t forget, you can find all these tips and recipes on my website at www.dorisdear.com/Gurl-Talk all one word.

Oh... who's that ringing my doorbell!?!?

Amra Faye Wright!

Amra Faye Wright is a broadway triple threat! She has been performing in "Chicago: The Musical" for 19 years! 14 years on Broadway! . 2001 was her opening in the UK company of Chicago! Originally from South Africa, she started late in life performing. 2 beautiful daughters and has recently started on a new path of artistry... painting! Her art is powerful and makes you look deeper!

Our drink today was the ‘Doris Dear Gin and Tonic’. Here is my version just for my fans!

The Doris Dear G & T!

Now this is really a “to taste” drink. But I like to stick with basics here. My version is similar to the ‘EVANS’ cocktail in the UK!

Fill a tall glass with ice and squeeze a hearty slice of lime over it. To that pour

1 full jigger of gin
Fill with tonic water
Add a lemon wedge on top and serve!

I hope you enjoyed the show!

See you next week for episode 2 with another fab artist friend dropping in for a cocktail!
